One would almost think that they were in a hurry to make it a Peugeot, with a seemingly random chosen number, completely unrelated to the rest of the cars at that time, which causes the current Peugeots to be stuck at X08 and X008.
My grandfather had a dark grey 309, which he sold to a friend almost 20 years ago, and while both my grandfather and the friend he sold it to have passed away, the 309 is still driving around the same village, and is still going strong. There is even a small portion of me that wants to buy it.

Our local police had these back in the day and you could tell who were CID (detectives) as they drove black, blue or red five door 309s.

Well, according to Wiki:
“The exhibit label (2012) states candidly: «Prévu d’abord de succéder à la Talbot Horizon sous le nom de Talbot Arizona, on a choisi de l’appeler Peugeot 309. Choix motivé par des raisons de marketing, la marque Talbot affichait des résultats catastrophiques, et les Peugeot de génération 5 avait déjà une 305.(expected to succeed the Horizon under the name of Talbot Arizona, they chose to call it the 309. A choice motivated by marketing reasons, the Talbot name showed catastrophic results and Peugeots of the -05 generation already had a 305)“
I haven’t seen one in years.

Ah, that explains it somewhat.
The only 309s I’ve seen in the past few years were the one that used to belong to my Grandfather, and a faded red early 309 that somehow happened to drive in front of me a few weeks in a row last year, but I haven’t seen it in a while.

Been ages since I’ve last seen one. 205s and 206s are still sort-of common, but these things have disappeared like the rest of the Talbots.
Gotta love the GTi16 though, shame it’s LHD only.
